Halff’s Stephen Woodring Park Wins WHA Sustainability Stars Award
HOUSTON — Halff’s revitalization of Stephen Woodring Park for Harris County Municipal Utility District No. 71 has been recognized by the West Houston Association (WHA) with the Sustainability Stars Award.
The Sustainability Stars Award honors outstanding applicants for sustainability efforts in land development and infrastructure projects across Greater West Houston, while emphasizing five key pillars: investigation, investment, integration, inspiration and innovation.
Stephen Woodring Park involved the renovation and expansion of an existing park facility. The improved park included a new splash pad featuring several water play elements with custom built-in bench seating and a custom pergola. A synthetic turf event lawn will serve as the central gathering space, separating the splash pad from a new playground featuring new, modern play equipment geared toward various age ranges.
To complement the existing community building, a proposed park pavilion with matching brick and roof serves as the major structural focal point for the park. The park pavilion houses several picnic tables, and includes GFI outlets and an outdoor ceiling fan. The park facility has additional parking, which will integrate Low Impact Development (LID) principles of bioswales and natural filtration to accommodate stormwater runoff.
Funded through park bonds, Halff transformed underdeveloped land and integrated sustainable site solutions to create a vibrant green space where the community could gather.
